Dead Inside Dark Outside — Index

Dead Inside Dark Outside is a collaborative single by Bladee and Ecco2k, released on December 13, 2016. The song is produced by Whitearmor and F1LTHY.

Background

Prior to its release, Dead Inside Dark Outside was previewed live by Bladee and Ecco2k on numerous dates of the Eversince Tour, in November and December 2016. As it was first previewed at the Copenhagen date of the tour, the Drain Gang fanbase would commonly refer to the song as "Copenhagen unreleased", before the official release of the song.

The lyrics to Ecco2k's verse were teased by Ecco2k in a Tweet on his robber0540 account, in September 2016. Additionally, the song's release was hinted at by F1LTHY in a Tweet, on December 4, 2016.

Release

Approximately six hours before its surprise release, Ecco2k tweeted a video of Dead Inside Dark Outside being performed in Berlin, Germany on the Eversince Tour, hinting at its release. The song released on December 13, 2016, exclusively via Drain Gang's Soundcloud.

Cover art

The cover art is designed by Ecco2k. The art is a heavily edited meme, which made rounds around Twitter and Tumblr around the time the song had released.

The skeleton character featured, is "Death Fairy" created by Kajetan Obarski, better known as kiszkiloszki, an artist and animator that first gained traction on his Facebook and Tumblr pages.

While it is hard to track down the original poster, the "when ur dead inside but still want to brighten up other people's lives" meme began circulating Twitter in November 2016, just prior to the release of Dead Inside Dark Outside. The meme used in the cover art is a screenshot from Twitter.

Lyrics

Wake up, F1lthy

[Chorus: Bladee]

Dead inside, but I still smile

I got nine lives in the X-Files

Dark outside, let the moth fly

Audi pass by, bloody red eyes

Drained the night, blood moon cried twice

Silver shine bright, No Life Gang rides

Stained the Nikes, stepped on blind mice

Stepped on white ice, then I changed price

[Verse: Ecco2k]

Headless, razor-wire necklace (Razor-wire necklace)

You look so helpless, let me be your weapon

I got no love, but it's whatever (No love, but it's whatever)

I don't remember any happy endings

Play dead, I'm escaping (Dead, I'm escaping)

I'm a famous ghost, no location

I told them go talk to my agent (Go talk to my agent)

Faded in the suburbs getting braided

Aching, when will I ever be painless? (Painless)

Medication, memories erasing

Drain Angel stay under surveillance

Still waiting, I've been gone for ages (I've been gone for ages)

Went to LA, got a facelift (Got a facelift)

I just want someone to play with (Someone to play with)

And lately I've been feeling jaded

Stay away from mirrors 'cause I still don't talk to strangers

[Chorus: Bladee]

Dead inside, but I still smile

I got nine lives in the X-Files

Dark outside, let the moth fly

Audi pass by, bloody red eyes

Drained the night, blood moon cried twice

Silver shine bright, No Life Gang rides

Stained the Nikes, stepped on blind mice

Stepped on white ice, then I changed price

Dead inside, but I still smile

I got nine lives in the X-Files

Dark outside, let the moth fly

Audi pass by, bloody red eyes

Drained the night, blood moon cried twice

Silver shine bright, No Life Gang rides

Stained the Nikes, stepped on blind mice

Stepped on white ice, then I changed price
